Structure of the Championship (Men) 6 rounds are played, starting with a qualifying round of 12 games. The best 72 of these go through to round 2 played over 4 games and the leading 36 play another 4 games in round 3. The best 18 play 4 more games then the top 8 play in a Round Robin tournament where everybody plays each other once. In the finals, fourth plays third in a one game match, the winner plays second and the winner of that game plays the leader for the championship. Qualifying Round After the 12 games, the leader was Peer Luers of Germany with an average of 217.8. 23 others had averages over 200. The leading English player was Nick Froggatt (who plays for Team England) was 5th with an average 213.3. Pat Byrne opened with a 232, his best game of the event and finished 59th with an average of 191.4. Gary Oakley was 69th, average 188.8. Both qualified for the next round. Second & third Rounds The leader after these rounds was Anders Ohman of Sweden, average 217.0. Nick Froggatt moved up to third, average 215.3. Unfortunately both Gary and Pat missed the cut at the end of the second round and finished the championship in 55th and 56th place respectively. Fourth Round 18 players started the round, 3 English, 6 Swedish, 3 German, 2 Israeli and 4 other nations. Nick Froggatt took a clear lead after this round with an overall average of 218.5. (He averaged 234.5 in the fourth round). Anders Ohman was just behind with 215.7. Round Robin (last 8) Anders Ohman regained the lead, improving his average to 216.6. Nick Froggatt was second on 216.2. Gery Verbruggen (Belgium) was third and Carlo Greulich (Germany) fourth and these 4 contested the final matches. Finals In game 1, Greulich beat Verbruggen 256 - 236 and went on to beat Nick Froggatt after tying the scores at 181 each but winning the roll off. Anders Ohman of Sweden won the championship though with a score of 268 against Greulich's 222. |

Qualifying Round Bettina Lund of Denmark lead after the first 12 games with an average of 206.1. Kirsten Penny was the best English player in third place with 200.6. Karen Byrne qualified for the next round in 33rd place with an average of 169.8. Second Round Bettina Lund stayed in first place after another 4 games (which included a 277 game) , averaging 206.2. Kirsten Penny improved to second place with an average of 202.6. Karen didn't make the cut for the next round but finished in 29th place, averaging 173.2 overall but 183.3 in the second round. Third Round Kirsten Penny took a decisive lead after these 4 games when she scored 244, 255, 226, 253 (Ave 244.5) Her overall average was 211.0. Second place was Martina Beckel of Germany (204.1). Round Robin (last 8) Kirsten Penny remained in front with 207.7 after these 7 matches. The other finalists were Martina Beckel (206.4) Iben Tchu (Denmark) 203.0 and Bettina Lund 202.9. Finals In game 1, Lund beat Tchu 235 - 194 and then beat Beckel 236 - 215 but lost in the final game to Kirsten Penny 229 - 214. Kirsten Penny of England was therefore the Malta Open 2001 Ladies Champion. |
